Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett today issued a new warning to the Western Powers against the continued shipment of arms to the Arab states, especially Egypt.
Speaking to a press conference here, the Foreign Minister objected to the flow of western weapons, including jet planes, to the Arab states. He pointed out that with the Arab states still clearly hostile to Israel and with their economic boycott of the Jewish State stil in effect the supply of such arms was a threat to Israel’s security. He also pointed out that the situation contributed to the danger of regional and world conflict.
Mr. Sharett’s warning was considered particularly significant, coming as it did on the heels of a conference in the Egyptian capital by the representatives of the Arab League states on the recent United Nations debate of a proposal to ask the Arabs and Israel to enter into direct peace talks. The Cairo radio reported that the Arab League had condemned the “mere idea of an invitation to the Arabs to negotiate with the Israelis.” The announcer said that the Arab League has also expressed the hope that “there will be no repetition of these attempts.”
The Arab League, protesting the debate despite the fact that the peace appeal resolution was defeated in the General Assembly, said that such a plea would have aggravated the complicated Palestine situation.
