Snow fell over this city last night, and covered the hills in Upper Central Galilee today, while rains drenched most of the rest of the country. However, the downpours came too late to save the winter crops. In the unirrigated areas of the Negev, the entire winter crop has apparently been lost. In the rest of the country, it is believed that no more than about 25 percent of the winter crops have been saved.
Meanwhile, the unaccustomed snows provided a Sunday holiday for thousands of Israelis who by bus and private aitomobile, journeyed to the Galilee, taking children with them to see a sight they had never seen before–snow. The temperatures around Safad and Meron fell to as low as minus seven degrees centigrade.
