The Israel Ministry of Social Welfare has asked the Parliamentary Finance Committee for an additional 800,000 pounds ($2,240,000) for “urgent needs” in immigrant settlement and work villages.
The request pointed out that the bulk of new immigrants are still in tents and are “exposed to rains and cold.” The Ministry also said that about 10,000 children and ill immigrants will have to be moved at once to “cities or better-situated places.” Some of these distress cases will also be moved in with private families for temporary care.
Plans for the construction of 60,000 housing units for immigrants during the fiscal year 1951-52 have been completed by the Housing Department of the Ministry of Public Works, which is still seeking approval for the project. Meanwhile, the Department has let contracts for the construction of 6,800 housing units in various parts of the country. The cost of this project, which will be completed during the next few months, is over $2,500,000.
