Close to 48,000 housing units are scheduled to be erected during the current fiscal year under a program being conducted by the Ministry of Labor’s housing department, it was announced today. The units, ranging from one and a half to two rooms, with a kitchen and bathroom, are being financed directly by the government, with the exception of some 7,500 units which are receiving private financial support.
Immigrants will be assigned to the new units as fast as they go up by the absorption department of the Jewish Agency. The houses will be government owned with the immigrant tenants paying a rental of about $9.60 monthly.
