Minister of Commerce and Industry Pinhas Sapir told the Knesset (Parliament) here last night that he would not order an Israeli firm making uniforms for West German soldiers to cancel its contract. He made the statement in replying, on behalf of the Government, to questions concerning this issue. The clothing is being manufactured in this country by Ata, an Israeli textile firm.
Mr. Sapir declared he did not think that “the supply of uniforms to the Bundes-wehr constituted an affront to Jewish workers.” One of the parliamentary questioners had asked the Minister whether it was true that Ata workers were being subjected “to what amounts to tyranny” when they were ordered by the company’s management to work on the German uniform manufacture on threat of dismissal. Mr. Sapir replied that the Ata management had denied such coercion.
