The Income Tax Division of the Israel Treasury was the target of brisk criticism today for publishing in many Israel newspapers a large advertisement listing tax evaders who have been sentenced by the courts.
The advertisements listed each evader’s name, address, charges and court fines. Those who criticized the action of the Treasury pointed out that publicizing the names of convicted evaders amounted to a second punishment for one offense, Also that the lists seemed restricted to medium and small tax evaders. There was considerable popular questioning as to “what’s happening to the big evaders?”
