The Israel Government today warned Jordan of the “dangers” of its intractable attitude on the question of permitting the passage of a food supply convoy through the Arab Legion lines to the Jewish troops stop Mt. Scopus.
The warning came on the heels of a statement by the senior Jordan delegate on the mixed Israel-Jordan armistice commission that “we are a sovereign nation. We take orders from nobody, not even the United Nations.” The Jordanian, Azmi Mashashibi, was defying an order by U.N. truce chief Gen. William E. Riley to permit the convoy to pass in accordance with previously established regulations. The defy was made in the presence of Col. Bennet de Ridder, acting U.N. Chief of Staff.
An Israel Government spokesman declared that Mashashibi’s statement reflects an attitude of the Jordan authorities which Israel regards as dangerous. “It is gravely disturbing,” he stated, “to find a responsible senior official of the Jordan Government not only flouting the United Nations but denying its authority in matters where such authority is specifically established by the terms of the armistice agreement.”
