Moshe Sharett, former Premier and Foreign Minister, embarked this week-end on a two-month tour of Asian countries. Mr. Sharett’s trip was undertaken at the request of the Israel Government.
While Mr. Sharett carries no specific proposals on this trip, his purpose is to create friendly lies and sound out possibilities in a number of spheres. During the two months he will head an Israeli delegation to the forthcoming Asian Socialist conference in Bombay and will attend the Interparliamentary Conference in Bangkok. His itinerary includes Burma, the Philippines, Japan, Singapore, Ceylon, Nepal Siam and perhaps several other states.
In a statement before his departure, Mr. Sharett explained that the purpose of his trip is to make “personal contact with the leaders of as many countries as possible” on the Asian continent and to renew friendships with those he has already met. Although he will not be engaged in an official government mission, Mr. Sharett pointed out, he will explain that Israel’s policy in recent years is to establish and improve relations with all peace-loving nations, especially in Asia where Israel is situated.
