Deputy Defese Minister Mordechai Zipori acknowledged that Israel supplied arms to Nicaragua in the past but it does not do so any longer, in response to questions in the Knesset today. He noted that many other countries also supplied arms to Nicaragua bet when things “got complicated,” Israel made a point of ending its supply to the Somoza regime. He disclosed that a recent shipment of Israeli arms to Nicaragua was ordered back while en route to that country.
Meanwhile, a group here established today a committee to support the Sandinista guerrillas in Nicaragua in their battle against President Anastasio Somoza. The committee, formed by Sheli activists at Hebrew University, said they intend to send medical equipment to the Sandinista underground.
The committee also sent a cable of support for the Sandinistas, which was signed by Knesseters Yossi Sorid Chaika Grassman, Moshe Amar all of the Labor Alignment, Meir Payil and Url Avneri of Sheli and Shulamit Aloni of the Civil Rights Movement.
