There are more than 4,000 synagogues in Israel today compared with only 800 at the time of the establishment of the State in 1948, and 500 others are under construction, it was reported here today by Religious Affairs Minister Zorach Warhaftig during the presentation to the Knesset, Israel’s Parliament, of his Ministry’s 1963-64 budget. The figures, he noted, did not include an additional 250 youth synagogues.
During the coming year, some 750, 000 pounds ($250, 000) has been allocated for synagogues from Government funds and other sources including the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization, the Silverman Trust and Heichal Shlomo, the Supreme Religious Center. Eight new synagogues are also being established in development towns by means of a grant of 750, 000 pounds from Sir Isaac Wolfson, prominent British philanthropist.
