Israel has accepted more refugee immigrants than any other country since the establishment of the International Refugee Organization in July, 1947, it was announced here today by the I.R.O.
By the end of January, 1949, Israel had received 86,384 DP’s, or 5,000 more than the total number of displaced persons accepted by Britain, hitherto the largest refugee-receiving country, the I.R.0. announcement said. (Many of the immigrants who have entered Israel are not listed in the I.R.O. total because they are not officially defined as DP’s by that organization. The countries which took the greatest number of refugees between July, 1947, and January, 1949, follow in order: Israel, Britain, Canada, France, Argentina, United States, Belgium, Australia and Venezuela.
