Israel has applied to the Soviet Union for a loan but “so far without success,” Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett declared yesterday, the New York Times reported today.
The dispatch said that Mr. Sharett, speaking to a labor mass meeting, answered criticism that Israel was “passing its hat around only in the western world by saying: “It is no fault of ours that the Soviets apparently are unable to accede to our demand for credit.” He also revealed that the Jewish state had received a “sizeable” loan from Belgium and was negotiating for credit with Switzerland.
