The highway linking the Israeli town of Afula, ten miles south of Nazareth in central Palestine, with Hadera on the coastal plain was open today for unrestricted Israeli use, following withdrawal of Arab Legion forces from their advanced positions at Um E1 Fahm, which dominated the highway.
The Arab withdrawal was in accordance with the armistice reached between Israel and Transjordan on the island of Rhodes, providing for retirement of Arab forces along a wide front in central Palestine. According to the withdrawal timetable, the Legion will complete its retirement from advanced positions on Sunday.
The establishment of two new settlements was announced today by the Israeli Government. One was that of a group of Hungarian immigrants, set up in Galilee. The second, a communique said, was established near Rehovot, by former Cyprus detainees.
A three-family housing unit, constructed in four days at a cost of $1,200 per family unit, vas inspected today by Premier David Ben Gurion and Labor Minister Golda Myerson. The building was erected by the Central Housing Building Corporation at Abu Kabir, near Tel Aviv.
