“The Egyptian blockade against Israel may be brought up for discussion at the United Nations, it was hinted here last night by a spokesman of the Israel delegation. Commenting on a statement by the Egyptian delegation here that shipments of food to Israel are being allowed through the Suez Canal without interference, the Israel spokesman said:
“The Egyptian promise to stop interfering with Israel food imports is welcome as far as it goes. However, Egypt is under obligation to abandon all regulations and practices of blockade with respect to all commodities or cargoes bound for Israel ports. The resolution of the Security Council of Sept. 1, 1951 opposed all such restrictions and upheld the right of Israel and all other states to trade freely with each other through the Canal.
“The Security Council was especially Insistent in opposing Egypt’s illicit ban on the passage of oil tankers through the Canal. The Council also rejected Egypt’s claim of belligerency which is the central cause of all the present tension. Thus, the statement of the Egyptian delegation leaves the situation as it was when the Security Council made its ruling.
“It is completely proper and “in place’ for Israel to discuss In the United Nations the whole question of the Egyptian blockade regulations. We shall not abandon this matter so long as the illicit blockade is in force to any degree in defiance of the Security Council’s ruling.”
