Twenty thousand government employes went on a four-hour strike this morning to protest a decision by the ministerial committee on wages to abolish the “specific allowances” hitherto paid to them. The walk-out silenced Israeli radio and television from 8 a.m. until noon and emptied post offices and other Communications Ministry departments. The departments of income and property tax, customs and national insurance were also shut down. The strike leaders ignored a plea by civil servants union chairman Haim Bernstein to call off the strike. Bernstein warned that the employes would he docked by the government for the four hours they didn’t work.
