Israel’s retaliation yesterday to Syria’s Monday attacks has apparently inflicted heavy casualties and extensive damage. At least two Syrian tanks along the cease-fire line were seen ablaze. Several anti-tank guns, pillboxes and fortified positions were directly hit by Israeli jets. Syria initiated the fighting with an attack on Nahal Geshor in the Golan Heights, Syrian territory occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War. An 18-year-old girl was killed, and 11 to 14 Israeli soldiers, five of them women, were reported injured. The funeral of the girl, Dorit Shaked, will take place today in her home city of Haifa. Rambam Hospital in that city reported that the condition of the injured is satisfactory.
