Wihin a few hours after a bomb exploded in Tel Aviv’s Carmel market, the Israel Air Force hit terrorist bases in Lebanon north of the Litani River. The main target was the Dahr el-Tutah terrorist base and training camp, eight miles south of Sidon. The base is used as a staging area for attacks on Israel and is completely made up of terrorists, isolated from the civilian population, according to the army spokesman.
The decision to react swiftly was made at the highest level. Premier Menachem Begin was fully briefed about the bombing in Tel Aviv and the subsequent Air Force raid from which all Israeli planes returned safely. Israeli sources said the raid was necessary to stress again that the terrorists will be hit wherever they are. El Fatah had claimed responsibility for today’s atrocity.
