The memory of Henri Donant, founder of the International Red Cross, was honored in Israel yesterday by the planting of a public garden in his name here. The ceremony was attended by Emil Besang, the Swiss Ambassador, who compared the friendship of Switzerland for Israel with a Swiss timepiece–“once activated, it is perpetually reliable.”
The ceremony, which also marked the 50th anniversary of M. Donant’s death, was addressed also by Yaacov Tsur of the Jewish National Fund directorate, she cited M. Donant’s support for a Jewish State at the first Zionist Congress in Basle. He disclosed that a large number of non-Jews joined with the Swiss Jewish community to provide funds for the memorial garden.
