Israel is playing a prominent role at the Third International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, which was convened here yesterday by the United Nations, in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Fifteen Israeli scientists and experts are attending the conference, and Israelis will present a total of 11 papers at the conference, which is to run until September 9. Both the size of Israel’s delegation and the number of papers by Israelis is considered as significant, since few countries of Israel’s size have recognition from the conference.
One of the major Israeli papers will deal with the feasibility of nuclear power for desalination of sea water–a subject in which Israel is graded among the top countries regarding expertise. Three Israeli scientists collaborated on that paper. They are Professor Shimon Yiftah, head of the nuclear science department of Technion, the Israel Institute of Technology at Haifa; and Prof. F. Aschner and Pinhas Glueckstern, both of the Israel Electric Corporation.
