A list of 10 more Israelis still being held in Syrian prisons was presented today by the Israel Government to Gen. Odd Bull, chief of staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization with a request to ensure their return. The list was compiled following the interrogation of the II Israelis who were freed in last weekend’s Syrian-Israel prisoner exchange, when 18 Syrians were freed by Israel.
In a meeting yesterday with United States Ambassador Walworth Barbour, Prime Minister Levi Eshkol conveyed to the American envoy the details of the cruel handling by Syria of the Israeli prisoners, and indicated that Israel may submit the matter to the United Nations.
During the meeting, which was held at Ambassador Barbour’s request, it was understood that the U.S. envoy explained the American position in the recent United Nations refugee debate, which was followed by sharp, adverse reaction in the Israel press. The Ambassador reportedly assured the Premier that the stand taken at the United Nations by the U.S.A. in no way signifies any change in the basic American approach to the matter. A wide range of topics pertaining to U.S.-Israel relations were reviewed during the meeting.
