Israel is holding contacts with Syria via an unnamed Arab country, according to Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Nawaf Masalha. Since Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak was elected in May, both Barak and Syrian Foreign Minister Hafez Assad made public statements indicating their desire to renew peace negotiations, which broke off in 1996.
