The State Bank of Israel issued a new series of banknotes today in half-pound, pound, five-pound, ten-pound and fifty-pound denominations. David Horowitz, president of the bank, in announcing the new issue, make it clear that “there is no fiscal or financial or monetary change in the introduction of the new banknotes and we are not withdrawing or annulling the old banknotes, nor are we increasing the volume of currency in circulation.”
The new banknotes, he explained, will be put into circulation gradually replacing old, outworn and soiled notes which will be retired from circulation. The new currency was printed by the famous London firm of Thomas de Larue. A different Israel scene appears on each denomination of the new issue.
