The removal of the courts from the authority of the Ministry of Justice was proposed here today at a meeting of magistrates and district court judges from all parts of Israel. The seven justices of Israel’s Supreme Court were present at the session.
The meeting was an outgrowth of a recent statement in Parliament by Justice Minister Dov Justice to the effect that Israeli judges were too lenient in their sentencing. The judges, who went on a “precautionary strike” against the Minister, refused to pass any sentences last week. Today’s meeting was preceded by separate gatherings of magistrates and of district judges.
