Israel Knox Dead at 79

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Dr. Israel Knox, former director of the English-speaking division of The Workmen’s Circle and former dean of the Graduate School of the Jewish Teachers Seminary. Knox, 79 years old, died here Monday at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

Born in White Russia, Knox emigrated to the United States in 1912 and studied at the Talmud Torah in New Haven. After graduating in 1932 from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, Knox received his Ph.d. from Columbia University in 1936.

Later he taught philosophy at the University of Ohio and at New York University as a full professor and was the author in 1957 of a biography of Rabbi Isaac Wise, one of the founders of American Reform Judaism. He was a contributor to the Jewish Forward, Workmen’s Circle Call, and the Yiddish Literary Journal. He was head of the English-speaking division of the Workmen’s Circle from 1947 to 1951.
