The Israel Government medical laboratories will proceed immediately with the manufacture of Salk anti-polio vaccine, the Cabinet decided here last night. The vaccine is expected to be ready for distribution by next Spring.
Meanwhile, the Cabinet has also allocated funds in the event that it becomes possible to purchase vaccine stocks from the United States. Dr. M. Btesh, director general of the Israel Health Ministry, who just returned from a visit to the United States, where he attempted to negotiate the purchase of Salk vaccine, reported that the U.S. is not prepared to export vaccine at this time. He pointed out that Israel’s laboratories are able to produce the vaccine.
