Israel’s Minister of Agriculture, Peretz Naphtali, today expressed regret in Parliament over the fact that Israeli growers have dumped 200 tons of tomatoes rather than accept low prices for the from cannery tomatoes.
While promising to prevent such occurrences, the Minister said he did not consider the event as “shattering Israel’s political and economic structure.” The Minister made his statement in reply to an interpellation as to why the tomatoes were dumped at a time when the country needs vegetables so badly. The dumping of the tomatoes took place near Haifa and ended when the Marketers Equalization Fund reached and agreement with the growers under which tomatoes will henceforth be sold to canneries at 65 Israel pounds per ton.
