A strong police contingent swooped down today on a number of homes in the Arab village of Taiyiba, near the Jordan border, about 10 miles southwest of Tiberias, and made a number of arrests. The raid followed the desecration of 20 Israeli flags on Independence Day eve. Officials said those arrested were known to be Communists and Arab nationalist zealots, and that more arrests were likely.
The Taiyiba town council denounced the vandalism at a special meeting. Except for the Taiyiba incident. Independence Day passed quietly in most Israeli Arab villages. Some 10,000 Arabs were among the 500,000 spectators at the annual parade in Tel Aviv.
