Isin Ivanier, a Montreal industrialist, stressed last night that Israel must develop nuclear energy in order to become economically self-sufficient.
Ivanier spoke at a meeting of the Canadian Friends of the Technion at the Ritz Carleton Hotel at which a drive was launched to raise $5-$6 million from the Montreal Jewish community to build a Canadian nuclear research center for the training of Israeli engineers in nuclear energy problems. Ground-breaking for the center to be located in Haifa is scheduled for January.
“Israel’s independence hangs on cheap, fast and convenient energy,” Ivanier said. “Becoming economically self-sufficient is the only way to ensure the political security and moral reliance of our people and its destiny.”
Ivanier said that the nuclear research center will provide Israel with engineers capable of establishing nuclear plants throughout the country to provide electricity needed for industry and agriculture, to irrigate the Negev and to create new jobs. Technion president Amos Horev attended the meeting.
