Israel is not likely to heed the request of Lt. Col. Byron V. Leary, Acting Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization, that it cease afforestation work in the no-man’s land area around Government House in Jerusalem, it was learned here today. Suspension of the work at this time would be detrimental to the non-military project, Israeli experts believe.
Col. Leary’s recommendation that Israel suspend its afforestation work in that area for about two months during which discussions should be held between Israel and Jordan to settle the dispute over the neutral zone was contained in a report distributed yesterday among members of the UN Security Council at the UN headquarters in New York.
It was noted here that Col. Leary’s recommendations were not orders or instructions requiring immediate and unconditional compliance.
