The Israel purchasing mission in Germany has obtained 1,000 tons of rubber from Malaya, valued at about $500,000, through German reparations payments, Dr. F.Shinnar, head of the mission, reported here today.
He said this and other purchases have been made outside Germany in countries where Germany has blocked currency accounts. In this way too, he stated, Israel has purchased hides from Argentina and Brazil and is negotiating for $700,000 worth of oil seeds and a large quantity of lumber from Austria. On next year’s account Israel hopes to purchase 50 tons of wheat from Turkey.
Dr. Shinnar said that an agreement has been concluded with German shipbuilders for the construction of six vessels and a floating dock valued at 60,000,000 marks. The ships will be two refrigerated vessels of 8,000 ton displacement for the shipment of citrus fruit, two straight cargo steamers and two 10,000 ton ships for both freight and passengers. Signature of the agreement to build the vessels awaits final approval by the Cabinet, he said.
He also re-emphasized the mission’s determination not to buy in Germany manufactured goods which would compete with locally made products. unless the Israeli items were priced much higher than the world price.
