Michael Comay, assistant director general of the Israel Foreign Ministry, leaves today for Rome to present Israel’s opposition against the projected signing of an agreement between the Arab League and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
The FAO Council, now meeting in Rome, has on its agenda a proposal for such an agreement. Israel’s position is that no comparison is possible between the Arab League and, as an example, the Organization of American States, which signed such an agreement with the FAO as a genuine regional organization.
Mr. Comay will contend that the League is not such an organization because it excludes Turkey, Iran and Israel. He will also argue that since the Arab League’s sole aim is economic and political warfare against Israel, it would be unthinkable for a United Nations agency to give official recognition to an organization whose purpose is to fight a member of the United Nations.
