The finance committee of the Knesset today continued its deliberations on the question of how to arrange government aid for the Jewish Agency in order that the Agency might secure the credits necessary for the balancing of its budget. It was indicated today that $30,000,000 is required by the Agency to balance its budget within the next six months.
The parliamentary finance committee also continued today its discussions on the question of the Dead Sea potash works. The committee considered a government request for the approval of a loan of American capital to enable the potash company to resume its operations. The Herut and the Mapam members of the finance committee demanded that the concession held by the company be cancelled. They strongly opposed any government aid to the company.
(In London a spokesman for the Palestine Potash Company dismissed as absurd reports that the Israel Government rejected a proposal for the transportation of potash from the Dead Sea through the Jericho Road which is presently under the control of Transjordan forces. No such proposal was submitted by the company, the spokesman said. The London Times reported from Tel Aviv that “present conditions make it impossible for the Potash Company to resume production without arriving at some agreement with the government of Transjordan.”)
