A special $60,000 contribution from the J.M. Kaplan Fund, Inc., headed by Jacob M, Kaplan, an American philanthropist, was “a major factor” in making possible the forthcoming American tour of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, it was announced here today by William Mazer, board chairman of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation.
The seven-week tour, during which the famous Israeli orchestra will play 30 concerts in 26 cities in this country, Canada and Mexico, will open with a gala premiere Sunday night at the Metropolitan Opera House here. On the following two nights, the Philharmonic will play at Carnegie Hall in this city. After the American tour, the orchestra will travel to Japan and to India.
At a press conference today, where Mr. Mazer announced the $60,000 contribution, Mr. Kaplan declared that he and Mrs. Kaplan gave this gift to help show the American people that “Israel is not only a country for refugee immigrants, or one merely seeking our economic help, but also a land that is building a full and rounded life for its people, and has an important contribution to make to the enrichment of the intellectual and artistic life of the world.”
