A number of proposals for changes in Israel’s Law of the Return and passports legislation will come up for consideration soon by a special Ministerial Committee, it was indicated here today.
Under the proposed changes, a new immigrant will be entitled to receive a passport only after living in Israel for a year except for special cases which will require special authorization. This change is intended to eliminate a practice by which people come to Israel as immigrants only to get a passport and then leave Israel.
Under another proposed change, Israeli citizens would forfeit their passports unless they returned within a specified period. This change is intended to rectify a situation in which thousands who left Israel many years ago and severed all ties with Israel still hold Israeli passports which in a number of cases have been misused by undesirable elements.
