Israel Police Inspector-General Yechezkiel Sachar revealed at a news conference today that “Sheikh Yousee Abu Gosh is alive and in good health and is hiding somewhere.” A letter from Abu Gosh was shown to newspapermen as evidence confirming the police announcement, but Mr. Sachar declined to disclose the reasons why the Sheikh is in hiding, saying that the police investigation is still in progress.
Abu Gosh, who aided the Sternists during the Mandatory period and during the Arab-Israel war, was reported missing after he had been charged with manslaughter and released on bail. Sternist deputies in the Knesset pressed the government for an inquiry and claimed that the missing Sheikh, as well as members of his village outside Jerusalem, had been expelled from Israel.
