Both governmental leaders and police officials were hastily preparing today for the arrival Wednesday of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and his party. The Secretary, accompanied by Mutual Security director Harold Stassen and Assistant Secretary of State Henry Byroade, are scheduled to remain here over Thursday before proceeding to Jordan on their fact-finding tour of the Near East and Asia.
The police were preparing for expected Communist anti-Dulles demonstrations and for a pro-Dulles demonstration by the Anti-Communist League. The editor of Kol Haam, the Communist daily newspaper, has been arrested and charged with incitement and with “defamation” of Secretary Dulles. He was later released on bail.
Meanwhile, caricatures and cartoons of Mr. Dulles have been chalked on walls in this city and he has been called a “warmonger.” Several youths were arrested here last night for scrawling such caricatures on buildings. The Mapam Central Council and the Committee for Peace, which is controlled by the Mapam, has announced that it will not hold any anti-Dulles demonstration.
