The World ORT Union has received a letter from Israel President Ben Zvi urging it to direct its energies toward assisting the Jewish Agency in bringing education to the youth of Ethiopia’s Falasha Jews.
The Ethiopian Jews, whose conversion to Judaism is sometimes traced back to the visit of the Queen of Sheba to King Solomon, number between 30,000 and 60,000. Until now, Emperor Haile Selassie has refused to allow them to emigrate, but recently authorized the Jewish Agency to open an elementary school for Falasha boys in Asmara and to send a group of them to Israel for a year’s study.
