Most Israeli newspapers expressed warm editorial approval of Prime Minister Golda Meir’s maiden speech in the Knesset yesterday. They welcomed in particular the “forcefulness’ with which she stated her government’s policy and said that it must be taken into account by anyone dealing with Israel in the future.
The independent daily Haaretz said that Mrs. Meir’s emphasis on Israel’s demand for direct peace talks with the Arabs and her assertion that Israel will hold the present cease-fire lines until a peace treaty is achieved indicated that neither the so-called Allon plan or any other scheme that falls short of an overall settlement was under consideration at present.
