Israel continued today to press the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization for permission to resume work on its Lake Huleh swamp drainage project near the Syrian border, which the Syrians interrupted ten days ago with a fusillade of rifle shots.
The United Nations military observers, after achieving a cease-fire, asked Israel to suspend its drainage project work. The Syrians had objected to the work, claiming it was being done on Arab lands in the demilitarized zone. Although the UN has now conceded that Israel is correct in its contention that the parcel in question is owned by Israel, the Truce Supervision Organization still insists that work remain suspended “in order to maintain tranquility.”
