British Minister of State Selwyn Lloyd yesterday refused in Commons to divulge the nature of a protest by Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath to the British Government over a recent statement by John B. Glubb Pasha, British head of Jordan’s army. The statement on the recent Israel-Jordan border incidents was anti-Jewish.
Replying to a query by Laborite Woodrow Wyatt, Minister Lloyd said that Britain had received the protest June 22, but added: “I see no reason to disclose the nature of confidential representations and so depart from the normal rules of diplomatic courtesy.”
Mr. Wyatt then pointed out the anti-Semitic nature of Glubb Pasha’s remarks and asked what control the British Government had over him and to what extent he spoke for the British Government. Mr. Lloyd replied that Glubb Pasha was a servant of the Jordan Government to which he was responsible.
