Israel Protests to Malta, Security Council States’ Envoys

Israel has protested to Maltese Premier Dom Mintoff about his recent speech in parliament in Valetta when he said he would join the terrorists were he a Palestinian. Israel’s Ambassador Yitzhak Ben Yaakov this week presented an aide-memoire to Mintoff’s chief of bureau expressing Israel’s displeasure with this utterance. Mintoff also attacked Defense Minister Moshe Dayan and said Israel was the obstacle to Mideast peace.

Meanwhile in Jerusalem. Foreign Ministry officials continued today their summonses of the Ambassadors of Security. Council member states who were told of Israel’s concern and displeasure at their support of the ‘non-aligned’ draft which the U.S. vetoed last week. The British envoy. Bernard Ledwidge, was called in and heard from senior official Yeshayahu Anug. The Australian Ambassador. Rawdon Dalrymple received the same lecture.

Yesterday the Ambassadors of Panama and Peru. two sponsors of the draft, were summoned to the Ministry. The French Charge d’Affaires is expected to receive the same treatment next week. All the envoys undertook to transmit Israel’s views to their home governments.
