Israel has purchased 100,000 tons of crude oil from the Soviet Union and has an option to buy another 100,000 tons, under an agreement signed in Moscow, it was announced here this week-end. The agreement is an outgrowth of the barter arrangement under which the Soviet Union exchanged crude oil for Israeli citrus products.
Samples for refining tests will begin to arrive in Israel within ten days, the announcement said. However, the bulk of the shipment will be loaded in Black Sea ports in July and thereafter. Israel uses about 1,000,000 tons of crude oil annually.
