Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim of Israel sounded a sharp protest today against the “wanton desecration” by the Jordanian Government of the Mount of Olives and Rachel’s Tomb which are both in Jordan-held old Jerusalem.
The Chief Rabbi issued his protest after reliable reports were received here that Jordan planned to raze the cemetery to make way for a park and to convert Rachel’s Tomb, one of world Jewry’s most sacred shrines, into a mortuary. Deploring the lack of access by Jews to the shrine and the cemetery, Rabbi Nissin called on “enlightened opinion” throughout the world to protest against the planned desecration.
