The Union of Jewish Students in France today called on “all progressive and democratic Jews” to express their “indignation” at the Israeli government’s decision to recognize the Chilean military junta. Calling the recognition “unspeakable,” the Union said Israel, by its action, “hasn’t even the excuse of trying to assure the security of the Chilean Jewish community.”
Israel today became the 24th nation to recognize Chile under the new military junta. The Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem received a formal note yesterday from the junta informing it of the change in government. Israel replied to this note which, according to accepted diplomatic procedure, was tantamount to recognition. Formal recognition, Israel explained yesterday, was not necessary since the junta professes to be the continuation of the government in Chile.
