Israel’s aim in the field of guarding the country’s security must be to obtain superiority in effective deterrent forces, the Cabinet has decided.
That decision resulted today from careful evaluation of a discussion held by the Cabinet yesterday, when the military needs of Israel, posited against Egypt’s recent acquisition of long-range missiles and of other military developments, were discussed by the Government.
The full-scale Cabinet debate on security took place after detailed reports by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who is also Minister of Defense, and Deputy Defense Minister Shimon Peres. Among the items discussed were:
The need to re-evaluate Israel’s policy of military-supply procurement, in view of the changes in the power balance as between Israel and the Arab states; the possible need for a supplementary budget for defense purposes; and the need for mobilization of all of Israel’s resources to help rectify the present imbalance.
In general, the Cabinet felt, a change in the nation’s attitude toward security and defense problems is indicated by the new military developments.
