Informed sources here said this evening that Israel was expected to agree to the anticipated selection of Swedish diplomat Gunnar Jarring as the United Nations special representative to the Middle East to seek to arrange an Arab-Israeli agreement under the terms of a Security Council resolution adopted unanimously yesterday.
The resolution, as it was evaluated here, was understood not to contain anything which would deny Israel’s insistence on direct talks with the Arabs. The view here was that Jarring should offer his good offices to arrange for such talks. The Cabinet will discuss the Council resolution at its regular meeting Sunday. It was expected to reiterate Israelis demand for direct talks for peace and to announce Israel’s readiness to work with Secretary General U Thant’s representative.
