Israel reportedly attacked Syria this month to stop it from acquiring nuclear warheads.
Britain’s Sunday Times newspaper, in an extensive report about Israel’s alleged Sept. 6 airstrike in northern Syria, quoted an Israeli source as saying the mission targeted an atomic installation.
“This was supposed to be a devastating Syrian surprise for Israel,†the source said. “We’ve known for a long time that Syria has deadly chemical warheads on its Scuds, but Israel can’t live with a nuclear warhead.â€
According to the Sunday Times, Mossad chief Meir Dagan warned Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in March that Syria was trying to buy a nuclear device from North Korea.
Syria and North Korea have denied any such cooperation. Israel and the United States have not officially commented on the alleged airstrike.
