Israel today formally requested the extradition of Shalom Shtarkes, who was arrested last month in London on suspicion of his having taken part in the abduction of his nephew Yossele Schumacher.
The nine-year-old boy was originally taken from his parents by his maternal grandfather Nachman Shtarkes because he felt the boy was not receiving a proper Orthodox upbringing. Nachman Shtarkes was returned to jail last month when he failed to produce the boy during a probationary period granted by an Israeli court. It was then indicated that the abducted boy was smuggled from Israel to London by his uncle, Shalom Shtarkes, and is believed to be still in England.
