The seamen’s strike situation in Israel today took a turn for the worse with both the union and Histadrut forces intensifying their opposition policies.

A tense situation developed in Haifa this morning when the S.S. Galila arrived this morning and its seamen, under order from their union, refused to leave the vessels. It is expected that they will not permit “volunteers” to take over their jobs and sail the vessel possibly even using force to keep them off.

Following the sailing yesterday of the Kedma for Marseilles with a crew of 50 “volunteers” replacing 50 striking seamen, the seamen’s union warned that their union members might strike on the high seas it the use of “volunteers” would be flown to any port in the world to operate ships stranded by the strike. The union today asked the Jewish Agency and the Shoham Shipping Company to guarantee in writing that immigrant vessels manned by its members would sail to no other destination than Tripoli where Libyan Jews are awaiting emergency evacuation.
