Israel wants peace with the Arabs and will make every effort to obtain closer relations and cooperation with all the peoples in the Middle East, Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Eliahu Elath declared last night, addressing the annual meeting of the New York chapter of the American Jewish Committee which took the form of a “Salute to Israel” celebration.
“We dare not exaggerate our present victory over the Arabs,” Elath cautioned. “While strengthening Israel is the main guarantee for our survival, we shall simultaneously launch a far-sighted and statesmanlike policy of rapprochement and understanding with our neighbors, in trying to build bridges and not walls between us.”
The Israeli Ambassador lauded Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee, as well as other Committee members, for the aid extended to Israel by the organization. He paid tribute to Blaustein and to Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, honorary president of the A.J.C., for their “unswerving devotion to the Jewish people and to the cause of Israel.” Harold Riegelman was reelected president of the A.J.C. New York chapter.
